Tobacco will help in the fight against malaria

Israeli specialists developed a genetically modified plant tobacco. A unique plant contains the connection, which can help in the fight against malaria.

Alexander Vainshtein and his colleagues managed to change the genetic code of the tobacco plants in such a way that it was make artemisinin, which is an important component in the anti-malarial drugs. In the natural form of артемизин only contained in wormwood one year. It is this connection
can fight with the development of resistant malaria. However, the concentration of artemisinin in wormwood is too small and in the manufacture of medicinal products require considerable amount of material costs. The cost of treatment drugs such high, so few patients can make use of the drug.

Israeli researchers combined enzyme wormwood, which is responsible for producing артемизина, with tobacco. The resulting plant has the genetic code of Artemisinin and can be used for the production of low-cost component.
